Excel Mfg. Inc. has utilized Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) to create parts and part geometry that no other piece of machinery would be able to achieve. This machinery allows for incredibly small corner radius’ in very deep pockets. We are able to achieve an .008″ corner radius within a 16-inch tall pocket. Another benefit is that this equipment is capable of simultaneously moving in four axis. This allows the upper head to drive a specific shape or tool path that is completely unique to the lower head’s tool path. An example for illustration would be a part that appears as a heart from the top, but a four-leafed clover from the bottom.

Excel Mfg., Inc. has produced very difficult to machine assembly components from tungsten using this equipment. When all of the components are stacked, their total length equaled 72 inches. The large end of the assembly had a rectangular window that measured 7 inches x 9 inches. This feature was in a cone shape and transitioned to a smaller shape through each separate piece of the assembly. With a total stack up of 8 components the tapered rectangular window was .200’’ x .500’’ on the small end of the assembly. Each component’s internal features seamlessly transitioned from one component to the next. The specific feature geometry could not be machined with a conventional milling style of application.

THE BENEFITS OF ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING

Electrical discharge machining is a unique manufacturing process where material is removed from a workpiece by a series of recurring electrical discharges. Much like processes such as laser cutting, EDM does not need mechanical force in the removal process. This technique allows current to flow between two electrodes (separated by a dielectric liquid), removing material from the workpiece to create specific part dimensions. EDM is a popular solution for more demanding applications that require extreme accuracy.

Benefits:

One key advantage of the EDM process is that the cutting wire never touches the workpiece, meaning that it doesn’t introduce any stress into the part. Another strength of EDM is its high-quality finish. The wire-cutting process creates smooth surfaces without burrs while holding close tolerances. Additionally, wire EDM can be used to build very thin eyelets and through-slots, features that simply cannot be machined using conventional methods.
